A major turning point occurred when she traveled with seasoned painters to take a class with Andrew Peters in Arizona. “Andy’s work is breathtaking and I was out of my league! However I realized then that I perceived and thought as a painter does.”
Barbara has since painted with instructors all over the country including Karen Weihs, Cashiers NC, Peggy Everett, St Simons Island, GA, and Bill Jameson of Saluda NC., as well as Barrett Edwards in both Italy and Maine. Barbara studied with Eric Wiegardt at Springmaid in Myrtle Beach SC in 2014 and spent two weeks with a group of his in Portugal in 2015. She also studied with a group led by Bill Jameson in Taos, NM in 2016.
In San Fedele(left) Barbara found herself painting with local artists in Vagliagli, Italy in a plein air contest celebrating the festival of the grape. (class with Barrett Edwards). For the former Spanish teacher and hospital volunteer manager, this felt a lot like home.
Barbara was born and raised in Mexico, attended university in the U.S, and raised her family in Augusta Ga.
The villages and landscapes of both Mexico and Italy, are an inspiration, as is painting anywhere outdoors. This was also a wonderful experience and ‘reality check’ on how far she had come on her journey as an artist.
